Diagnosing prostate cancer: insights from primary care

Diagnosing prostate cancer: insights from primary care

A report from the APPG

This report presents the evidence gathered at the APPG’s meeting in December 2025, at which members heard from Dr Sam Merriel (an NHS GP in North-West England and Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester), Dr Bunmi Olajide (a working GP in Greater London), Carl Armstrong (an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Cheshire), and Wayne Perkins (who shared his patient experience).

The report makes several recommendations aimed at addressing challenges within primary care relating to guidance for GPs, support to enable early case finding among men at the highest risk of prostate cancer, and additional resourcing to deliver sustained community‑level engagement programmes.
